Our Story

Finding Inspiration in Every Turn

Maneesha Abhay established the main branch of Sukruti in Kothrud, Pune way back in 1989 when the now bustling streets of Kothrud didn't have a lot of exposure to kathak. As a way to take her art forward and engage creatively with the people around, she founded an academy which has paved way for more than 500 students till date!

A disciple of Guru Pt. Rohini Bhate, the pioneer doyenne of Kathak in Pune, Maneesha tai grew as a performer and artist under Rohini ji's able guidance and tutelage. Her hard work of more than 35 years has now culminated into 6+ branches in Pune run by Maneesha tai and her senior students.

Our Aim

Pedagogy

At Sukruti, we strongly believe in using movement as a form of expression, hence all our courses are designed to be interactive and useful. Guru Rohini Bhate invented the first ever syllabus for step by step learning, and Maneesha tai has added a new flavour to this pedagogy by dividing it into 7 systematic steps from Padarpan (level 1) to Parangat (level 7).

The traditional teaching methodology is an integral part of our teaching style, inculcating a value system to develop creativity and thorough understanding of the dance form.

This system is being taken further by Siddhi Abhay, daughter and disciple of Maneesha tai by integrating interactive teaching techniques. The application based process of learning is found to be more effective and useful.

This interactive learning pedagogy is not only useful for the teacher student relationship but also encourages dialogue and creative thinking in students.

Courses

The courses begin with 'Padarpan' (level one) and go on until 'Parangat' (level seven).

All our courses are open for everyone, women and men.

Our courses are divided into 7 steps. They are open for children aged 6 onwards and also adults, enthusiasts, or dancers looking to resume their practice. Every course has a specific syllabus, designed by keeping in mind creativity, understanding and the beauty of classical dance. The end of every course is marked by a certificate examination, the completion of which ensures promotion to the next course. These examinations are conducted internally, as well as are externally certified by 'Gandharva Mahavidyalaya.' All students irrespective of their age are encouraged to appear for external examinations, but they are not compulsory, the choice of appearing for exams is entirely optional.

Since Kathak is a classical dance form, it does require regularity and commitment in order to get a thorough understanding and experience of the form. Hence we encourage regular attendance and participation in all the activities conducted by the academy.
